How old do I have to be to get a credit card?
To have a credit card independently, you must be 18 years old. If you know of an adult who will co-sign with you, or is willing to add you as an additional card holder on a credit account they have you can obtain a credit card even though younger than 18.
Prepaid cards can be issued to customers that are younger than 18 years old.
Usually, even at 18 you will need your own source of income to qualify for a credit card.
Good Credit Sense:
When you turn 18 and the pre-approved credit card offers start showing up in the mail, remember that your personal credit history is just starting. Don’t get carried away with the purchasing power of a credit card and find yourself overextended with your first credit card. A wise idea while starting your credit building journey with your first credit card is to charge only regularly occurring and necessary purchases on the card (gas, groceries, bills etc.) and pay the card off religiously each month. By demonstrating disciplined use of your credit cards, you’ll be off to a good start and your credit score will begin to reflect that quickly.
