Hilton Honors Points: 30% More Points For The New Year

The Hilton Honors program is jumpstarting the new year by giving you back 30% of the points you turn in to book hotel stays at any hotel in the Hilton Honors network.  The catch is that the promotion is only good for Premium Room Rewards or for Points & Cash redemptions.

Premium Room Rewards:  Use more points, get better rooms, no blackout dates

Points & Cash: Use half the points normally required in exchange for paying some cash.

Jump on it: The promotion ends January 31, 2012 and is applicable to hotel stays before June 30, 2012

I consider Hilton Honors points quite valuable as far as travel rewards points go.  If you are strategic with your points and take advantage of promotions that come along you can get up to 1.8 - 2.0 cents per point in value.  With the current promotion you can get 30% more value for your points.  If you’re already a Hilton Honors points collector, or are planning to apply for a Hilton Honors credit card to score some quick rewards points, now might be a good time to start planning your spring 2012 vacation stays.

Here’s how we figure you can make the most of this promotion using a few examples.

Personally, I flip flop a bit when planning a vacation.  Sometimes I plan by stretching my money as far as it will go, staying in basic hotels, and looking for cheap eats while I enjoy the sights with my wife and kids.   When I can break away with just my wife for a few days I prefer to celebrate our getaway by going for a classy hotel, accompanied by visiting a reputable up-scale restaurant for a meal or two.  Usually it is a shorter stay, but we’re able to soak in a little sanity before returning to the busy life with a career and kids.    Hoping a lot of you are in the same boat, I looked at a few examples of how the promotion could help you travel on the cheap.

High Luxury Beach Getaway Example

Nothing like a getaway to enjoy the warm sand slipping between your toes on a beach in Hawaii.  Hilton has a Waldorf Astoria Resort on the beach that looks like a place I’d enjoy stealing away to:

While the rainy days of spring invade in March, a getaway to enjoy a sunny Hawaiian stay at the Waldorf will cost you at least $489 per night.  Let’s see how the promotion helps out:

Hilton Honors Points Cash Points + Cash Promotion
Grand Wailea Waldorf Astoria 80,000 $489 30,000 + 100USD 21,000 + 100USD
Point Value .06 cents per point - 1.3 cents per point 1.85 cents per point

While trading points for your stay isn’t really a good deal (anything less than a penny per point isn’t worth it in my opinion), Points and Cash isn’t bad, and with the promotion bumps your point value up to 1.85 cents per point.

For the price of a motel 6 and a few Honors points, you can score a night or two at the Waldorf resort.  With the current Hilton Honors Credit card signup bonus alone and $200 you can just about pull off a two nights stay with your 40,000 point bonus.

Stretch Your Cash Family Stay Example

So maybe you couldn’t find a sitter and you’re going to settle for a road trip to Southern California  with the kids, let’s see how the promotion helps out with a basic tier 4 hotel and what your points are worth:

At the San Clemente Hampton Inn near the family friendly beaches of San Juan Capistrano, a nightly stay would normally cost you at least $143

The points shake out to be less valuable than our luxurious Hawaiian stay:

Hilton Honors Points Cash Points + Cash Promotion
San Clemente Hampton Inn 30,000 $143 15,000 + 50USD 10,500 + 50USD
Point Value .05 cents per point - 0.6 cents per point 0.9 cents per point

Promotion Conclusion:

Look to make the most of your Hilton Honors points for your spring getaways by aiming high.  With a little bit of cash on your side you can really maximize your point value while you pamper yourself in style.  Mid-tier hotels aren’t the best way to spend your points, but you can still take advantage of the promotion if you’d prefer to minimize the impact of your vacation on your bank account.  Be sure to register at the Hilton Honors Points Back website to take advantage of the promotion

Ways to Earn Points:

There are some great ways to earn Hilton Honors points without being a chronic business traveler.   There are always promotions and other advertising campaigns that will offer you ways to land a few Honors points.

  • In a previous post we mentioned that in the near future you will be able to earn 2500 Hilton Honors points for one click
  • Refer friends and family to the Hilton Honors program.  You can receive up to 25,000 points as a bonus, and get 1,000 points everytime they stay in a Hilton Hotel.
  • Transfer points from other programs.  For example, you can get 2 Honors points for every Delta Skymile that you transfer over.  Just call Delta Skymiles Customer service at 800-323-2323.  (You will have to pay a $30 fee for the transfer so make sure you’re transferring enough points to make it worth it)
  • Hilton Credit Cards – Get the 40,000 bonus after you spend $1000 in the first four months
